Triton Bay (Kaimana, West Papua) delivers the most reliable whale shark encounters in Indonesia outside of Cenderawasih Bay. Whale sharks come daily to feed beneath the bagans (traditional fishing platforms) where local fishermen drop small fish that attract them. Plus endemic walking sharks (a species that walks across the seabed on its fins, found nowhere else), soft coral gardens that rival Raja Ampat, and the dramatic Kiti-Kiti waterfall flowing directly into the sea at the foot of the Kumawa Mountains.
Operated by Komodo Luxury. Triton Bay charters available November through April.
Both Triton Bay and Raja Ampat sit in the West Papua coral triangle — together they form the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth. But the experiences are distinct:
Most experienced phinisi guests pair the two — Triton Bay for the whale sharks and unique endemics, Raja Ampat for the broad biodiversity and topside drama. Combined as one 12-day expedition, this is the West Papua signature voyage.
The bagans are floating wooden fishing platforms where local fishermen drop net-trapped small fish. Whale sharks have learned that bagans = food and approach daily for feeding. Snorkelers and divers float near the platforms (with the operator’s permission and conservation fee paid) and have repeated 30-90 second encounters with whale sharks 4-8 meters in length. The encounters are reliable enough that we typically see them 4-6 days out of every 7-day Triton Bay charter.
The narrow strait between two limestone islands at Triton Bay’s heart. Soft coral garden density is exceptional — 60-80% live coral coverage in some sections. Drift dive with moderate currents. Schools of fusiliers, jacks, and Spanish mackerels.
Named for its resemblance to Komodo dive sites. Pinnacle with strong currents and pelagic encounters — sharks, eagle rays, occasional manta. Advanced divers only.
An underwater photographer’s favorite. Macro life concentration is extraordinary — pygmy seahorses, frogfish, mandarin fish, ornate ghost pipefish, walking sharks at night. Calm conditions, ideal for slow-paced photography dives.
The walking shark (Hemiscyllium) is endemic to West Papua. They walk across the seabed on their pectoral fins. Night dives at multiple sites in Triton Bay reliably show 3-6 walking sharks per dive. A species you cannot see anywhere else in the world.
A waterfall that flows directly into the ocean at the foot of the Kumawa Mountains. The waterfall is approachable by tender. Swim under the falling fresh water while the sea swells around you. One of the most dramatic photography locations in Indonesia.
Ancient rock art on cliff faces dating back to prehistoric civilizations. Visible from boat tenders. The exact age is disputed but most archaeological estimates put them at 3,000-5,000 years old.
Optional 90-minute climb to the summit of Iris Island for panoramic views of Triton Bay. Best at sunrise.
Embark Kaimana (KNG), 7 nights of diving and topside exploration. Pricing: $42,000-$77,000 full charter.
The premium West Papua combination. Embark Kaimana, sail north through Triton Bay, transit to Misool (southern Raja Ampat), continue through central Raja Ampat, disembark Sorong. Pricing: $66,000-$200,000.
November through April. Calm seas, whale shark season at peak November-December and April-May. Avoid May-October (rougher seas, lower visibility, fewer whale sharks).
Embark from Kaimana Airport (KNG) in West Papua. Flights to Kaimana via Jakarta (CGK) or Sorong (SOQ). Total transit from US: 30-36 hours including overnight in Jakarta. We coordinate the entire journey through our concierge desk.
Triton Bay logistics are challenging — remote, narrow weather window, specialized whale shark protocols. Operated by Komodo Luxury, we have established relationships with local Kaimana communities, the bagans operators, and Triton Bay conservation authorities. Plus the U.S. service infrastructure for serious dive expeditions.

Expert dive masters guide you through kaleidoscopic underwater worlds, while knowledgeable local guides reveal the secrets of jungle trails and remote communities. Every day presents a new horizon and a new adventure, from paddleboarding through mangrove forests at dawn to enjoying a sunset cocktail on a deserted beach, the only footprints in the sand being your own. This unparalleled access to some of the planet’s most pristine and secluded locations defines the ultimate luxury escape.
A luxury phinisi voyage transcends mere travel, evolving into a holistic sensory experience where culinary artistry and personal wellness take center stage. Onboard chefs, often trained in international fine dining, transform the freshest local ingredients – from just-caught seafood to exotic fruits – into exquisite gourmet meals tailored to your dietary preferences and desires. Imagine a seven-course tasting menu enjoyed under a canopy of stars, or a casual beachfront barbecue prepared just for your party on a secluded island. The dining experience is as much a part of the journey as the destinations themselves, celebrating Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage with a modern, sophisticated twist.
Beyond gastronomic delights, these charters offer an oasis for rejuvenation. Many luxury phinisis feature dedicated spaces for yoga and meditation, allowing guests to practice amidst the serene backdrop of the open ocean or a tranquil bay. Onboard massage therapists provide soothing treatments, ensuring deep relaxation after a day of exploration. This seamless integration of adventure, indulgence, and well-being creates an unparalleled escape, allowing you to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with nature and yourself. The average crew-to-guest ratio of 1:1 or higher ensures an exceptionally attentive and personalized service throughout your journey.
