Updated: May 2026

A luxury phinisi liveaboard is the gold standard for diving in Indonesia — and for travelers who want to combine world-class diving with the most distinctive sailing yacht in Asia. Live aboard a private wooden phinisi yacht while diving Cape Kri, Manta Sandy, Batu Bolong, Manta Alley, Wakatobi pinnacles, and the remote Banda Sea hammerhead sites. Same vessel, same crew, same private experience for the entire trip — no commuting between resort and dive boat.

Operated by Komodo Luxury. From USD 4,500 per night.

What Makes a Phinisi Liveaboard Different

Most diving in Indonesia is done from land-based dive resorts: stay at a hotel, board a 30-minute speedboat to the dive site, return for lunch, repeat. This works for accessible sites but cannot reach the most pristine reefs, which are typically 6–24 hours of sailing from any resort.

A phinisi liveaboard solves this by being your dive boat and your hotel simultaneously. You sleep above the dive site. You wake up at the reef. You dive at sunrise before any day-trip boats arrive. You can do night dives without a 2-hour return commute to a hotel. And you reach destinations no land-based operation can serve — Misool, Wayag, the Banda Sea, the Forgotten Islands.

Top Phinisi Liveaboard Destinations

Komodo Liveaboard

4–7 day diving liveaboards covering Batu Bolong (current-swept pinnacle, sharks, mantas), Castle Rock (open seamount, barracuda tornadoes), Manta Alley (manta cleaning station), Manta Point at Karang Makassar, and accessible sites for non-divers like Pink Beach and Padar Island. Best season: April–November. See Komodo charters →

Raja Ampat Liveaboard

7–14 day diving liveaboards covering Dampier Strait (Cape Kri — 374 fish species recorded in single dive), Misool (Magic Mountain, Boo Windows, Four Kings), Wayag (limestone karst diving and snorkeling), and Waigeo. Best season: October–April. The world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystem. See Raja Ampat liveaboards →

Wakatobi Liveaboard

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. 750+ coral species, 900+ fish species. Sheltered island position means year-round availability with consistently calm seas. 6–10 day liveaboards covering Roma Reef, Cornucopia, Sombu Wall, and Waha Wall. Less crowded than Raja Ampat. See Wakatobi liveaboards →

Banda Sea Liveaboard (October–November)

Hammerhead shark sites at Manuk and Serua. Banda Neira’s spice-trade history. 14–21 day grand expeditions combining Komodo or Alor with Banda Neira and Raja Ampat. Narrow weather window. For experienced divers seeking pelagic encounters. See Banda Sea expeditions →

Triton Bay Liveaboard

Whale shark encounters at Kaimana bagans (most reliable in Indonesia outside Cenderawasih), endemic walking sharks, soft coral gardens. November–April. Often combined with Misool/Raja Ampat. See Triton Bay charters →

Alor & Pantar Liveaboard

Frontier diving with under 5% of Komodo’s tourist volume. Bama Wall (“Great Wall of Pantar”), Beangabang Bay muck diving, dramatic walls. April–November. Best paired with Komodo as 10–14 day expedition. See Alor charters →

Liveaboard Diving Requirements

Open Water certification minimum for all destinations. Advanced Open Water + 30 logged dives recommended for Komodo and Raja Ampat (current-driven sites). What U.S. Guests Say About Their Charter

"Booking Luxury Phinisi was the best decision of our 25th anniversary. The crew anticipated needs we did not even know we had. Captain Andi rerouted us to a private bay at Padar that no day-trip operator could reach. Worth every dollar."

David and Margaret K. — Houston, TX (7-day Komodo charter, March 2026)

"Our family of 12 spans ages 8 to 78. Most luxury operators could not accommodate the range. Reza's team built three parallel itineraries for us — Padar sunrise for the teens, gentle reef snorkeling for the kids, lounging on deck for grandma. Phenomenal."

The Williams Family — Aspen, CO (10-day multi-gen Komodo + Sumbawa, July 2025)

"We considered a Mediterranean superyacht for our honeymoon. So glad we chose Luxury Phinisi instead. The cultural depth, the diving, the absolute privacy of Wayag — nothing in the Med can compete. The boat itself is a story you tell for the rest of your life."

Jordan and Alex — Brooklyn, NY (14-day Raja Ampat honeymoon, December 2025)
