Indonesia stretches more than 3,000 miles east to west, and a phinisi is the only charter platform that covers all of it comfortably. Think of the archipelago in four bands. The Classics: Komodo & Raja Ampat
Komodo National Park
Komodo is the best first phinisi charter in Indonesia: short flights from Bali, a compact cruising area, and a dense run of anchorages — the Padar ridgeline, Pink Beach, dragon walks on Komodo and Rinca, and manta aggregations at Karang Makassar. Raja Ampat
Raja Ampat, off West Papua, holds some of the richest reef biodiversity ever recorded — the reason serious divers and underwater photographers treat it as a career trip. Charters run October through April from Sorong, from $5,500 per night, and the distances demand at least seven nights to reach the Dampier Strait, the Piaynemo karst lookout, the Wayag lagoons, and Misool's southern reefs. Banda Sea
The original nutmeg islands — Banda Neira's colonial fort, volcanic Banda Api, and blue-water crossings where schooling hammerheads appear in the September–November window. Triton Bay

Indonesia's most reliable whale shark encounter: at Kwatisore, the sharks gather year-round beneath bagan fishing platforms, and swimmers share the water with them in calm, protected conditions. A 600-mile arc of remote islands across southeast Maluku, between Timor and the Banda Sea — walls, sea snakes, and communities that may see one boat a month. Not every charter needs a domestic flight. From Benoa and Serangan, a Bali phinisi charter runs day trips and one-to-three-night cruises toward Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan — the right format for celebrations, corporate groups, and families testing life aboard before committing to a longer route.
