Updated: May 2026

The Banda Sea Grand Expedition is the most ambitious sailing voyage available in Indonesia — 21 days, 1,800+ nautical miles, combining Komodo or Alor with the Banda Islands, Forgotten Islands, hammerhead shark sites, and Raja Ampat. Available only October through November when weather windows align across all regions. This is the lifetime trip for advanced divers and serious sailors who want to see Indonesia at depths nobody else does.

Operated by Komodo Luxury. Pricing $210,000-$735,000 full charter.

Why the Banda Sea Is the Lifetime Trip

The Banda Sea sits between Sulawesi, the Forgotten Islands, and Papua. It’s one of the deepest seas in the world (maximum depth 7,440 meters / 24,409 ft) and historically the geographic heart of the Spice Trade. For 200 years from the 1500s, nutmeg and mace from the Banda Islands were worth literally more than gold in European markets — it’s the reason the Dutch traded Manhattan for the tiny island of Run in 1667.

For modern travelers, the Banda Sea offers three things nobody else does: hammerhead shark aggregations at remote seamounts, intact 17th-century Dutch colonial spice trade architecture at Banda Neira, and access to the Forgotten Islands chain — a 600-kilometer arc of islands between Timor and Papua that 95% of the world will never visit.

The 21-Day Grand Expedition Route

Days 1-3: Embark Labuan Bajo + Komodo Highlights

Sail from Labuan Bajo through Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo dragons, Manta Point. Acclimatization to phinisi life before the long Banda Sea passages.

Days 4-7: Sail East via Alor

Cross the Sape Strait, stop at Sangeang Volcano, sail through Alor and Pantar for frontier diving (Bama Wall, Beangabang Bay muck diving).

Days 8-12: Forgotten Islands

The most remote sailing zone in Indonesia. Stops at Damar, Romang, Babar, Sermata, Leti. These islands are accessible only by boat and only during a narrow weather window. Diving is mostly virgin reef — some sites have been logged fewer than 50 times in history.

Days 13-16: Banda Islands

Banda Neira is the cultural anchor of the entire expedition. Walk the original Dutch colonial streets unchanged since the 1620s. Tour Fort Belgica (1611) and Fort Nassau. Visit Hatta’s exile house (Indonesia’s founding vice president was exiled here by the Dutch). Snorkel directly off Bandaneira Jetty for Mandarin Fish mating dives at sunset. Dive Batu Kapal (a submerged pinnacle), Hatta Island walls, and Run Island.

Days 17-19: Hammerhead Seamounts

The highlight for divers: Manuk and Serua seamounts in October-November attract scalloped hammerhead aggregations. Schooling hammerheads in the 50-100 individual range. Advanced diving — currents are strong, depth targets are 30+ meters. Drift dive plan with safety divers.

Days 20-21: Sail to Sorong (Raja Ampat) & Disembark

Final sail through northern Banda Sea, arrival at Sorong, optional final dive in Dampier Strait, disembark for international flights via Jakarta.

Pricing — Banda Sea Grand Expedition

  • Flagship expedition (50-65m): $20,000-$35,000/night × 21 = $420,000-$735,000

All-inclusive (vessel, crew, fuel, food, water sports). Park fees additional ($100/person Raja Ampat + $25/person Banda).

Diving Requirements

This is an advanced expedition. Required: Advanced Open Water + 50+ logged dives + drift dive experience. Most operators require Nitrox certification. The hammerhead dives are deep, fast-current, blue-water environments. Photography lighting is challenging.

Booking Timeline

Book 9-12 months in advance. The 4-6 luxury phinisis capable of running this expedition (Lamima, Prana by Atzaró, and equivalent flagship vessels) sell out a year in advance for the October-November window. Late bookings are sometimes possible with smaller vessels but extremely limited.

Why This Expedition Exists Only October-November

Three weather windows must align: (1) Banda Sea calms after the southeast trade winds drop in late September. (2) Raja Ampat shoulder season opens in late October. (3) Forgotten Islands weather window opens in October-November. By December the entire region is monsoon-affected. By April-May another shorter window may open but with less reliable hammerhead sightings.
